Building Counterproposal Gran Via 19, Madrid

Counterproposal for a competition by 'Architecture Rebellion Spain'.

“Bearing the Legacy”
The facade redesign of Gran Via 19 draws inspiration from the City of Madrid's Coat of Arms, telling a vertical narrative. The base features red granite pillars entwined with bronze figurative elements, blending strength and grace, which support the yellow sandstone structure above. The central section is framed by side risalites and showcases the heraldic bear climbing trees represented by columns. The pediment is adorned with geometricized strawberry motifs and crowned by an inlaid shield depicting the city's coat of arms. The crown atop the shield doubles as a golden sun, illuminating the story of the facade.

Cornice bands connect the architectural elements, while figurative bears and vine motifs provide visual balance. Seven functional balconies are integrated, placed between columns or beneath arches, creating a loggia-like atmosphere. The balconies are walkable extensions, contributing to the overall harmony of form and function.

The architectural style blends Neo-Renaissance, Historicism (with references to Hermann Nicolai), and Reform architecture (inspired by Hans Erlwein). These stylistic choices maintain alignment with the surrounding buildings while preserving a distinct character. Occasional metal sheeting covers exposed structural elements, matching the cool tones of the helmet-shaped terminations of the side risalites.
